good talent management used to mean lifetime jobs, company-managed careers, company-sponsored training and generous benefits. IBM, AT&T and some other large bureaucratic companies were the best practitioners of this approach. It served them well by helping them attract and retain the best talent of yesteryear. Today, change is rampant, global competition is fierce, and the needs and values of the best talent have changed. New approaches to talent management are needed. Two approaches have emerged that appear to fit today’s business realities: the “commitment to development” approach and the “travel light” approach.
